3-9g. Usually cooked separately in a double boile
Cautions:
This is a slightly warm herb that aids fire and can contribute to retention of a pathogen. It must therefore be used carefully in cases where the presence of an external pathogen is clear. It should not be used in those with steaming bone disorder, bleeding due to heat in the blood, ascendant Liver yang, or in any condition due to fire from constraint. It should not be taken with high doses of caffeine or other stimulants. See Toxicity.

There are many varieties of this herb.
Quality:
Good quality is thick, long, unfragmented and has a thin, yellowish white cortex. Red ginseng should be reddish brown and translucent. In wild varieties the lateral roots should also be very long.
